Kelah is a river fish that is known as the King of Rivers or Tiger of the Waters.

To anglers, Kelah is a outstanding game fish as it provides recreation and a challenging catch as it cunningly avoids the angler's hook.

To fish collectors, it's distinct fins and scales of various colours including silver, gold, red and blue makes the Kelah a prized acquisition.

To fish eaters, the fine flesh of Kelah provides an exquisite taste, comparable to the cod and local terubuk but with less fine bones. The Cafe Lui serves 'Kelah bakar', barbequed in a way that will maintain its natural oil and taste.

A group of friends (organised by Ms Jian Lee) from KL and Damansara held a get-together at Cafe Lui on 20th July 2010. They ordered all their favourites - on the menu was Laksa Johor, Rice with Gulai Asam Pedas, Ikan Kelah Bakar and our hot-selling Chicken Divine.

After the feast, they went for a walk around the grounds before returning to the Cafe to enjoy the spread of local fruits that were in season (durian, chempedak, manggis & duku langsat).

Perjumpaan bekas pelajar-pelajar Sekolah Rendah Sungai Lui telah diadakan di Cafe Lui pada 8 Mei 2010 jam 8.30 malam. Persekitaran Cafe Lui telah dihias untuk menimbulkan suasana nyaman Cafe di dalam taman.

Majlis telah dihadiri oleh hampir 50 bekas pelajar dan guru. Antara mereka, yang telah hampir 10 tahun meninggalkan sekolah tersebut, kini ada yang sedang melanjutkan pelajaran di Pusat Pengajian Tinggi, ada yang sudah bekerja dan tak kurang juga yang mempunyai perniagaan sendiri.

Majlis makan malam BBQ mereka telah dimeriahkan lagi dengan dendangan nyanyian karaoke oleh beberapa bekas pelajar.

Kami doakan mereka semua maju jaya dalam bidang pilihan mereka masing-masing.

A gallery dedicated to conserving the “Rolls Royce” of river fish is open to the public at the family-run Lui Farm, about 10km from here.

The Galeri Kelah, operated by retired Royal Malaysian Navy admiral Datuk Ahmad Haron, aims to be the centre of knowledge for the public to understand and appreciate the tenacious and highly-valued ikan kelah (carp).

“There’s always been a great demand for kelah, especially among anglers. You do not consider yourself an angler until you have caught a kelah,” he said during an interview after the gallery’s opening yesterday.
Galeri Kelah also features a nursery and hatchery for the farm’s partners — Bung Hatta University in Indonesia, Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa — to conduct research into the ecologically-sensitive kelah.

“Because of overdevelopment along rivers, the kelah’s environment has been threatened. As a wild fish, it used to be abundant in our rivers,” he said.

Our Ikan Kelah bakar (BBQ) is also becoming more and more popular. Fish lovers come from near and far to have ikan Kelah bakar and leave fully satisfied.

Wikipedia: Johor laksa (Malay: Laksa Johor), from Johor state in southern Malaysia, resembles Penang laksa only in the kind of fish used but differs in everything else. Johor laksa has coconut milk, use 'kerisik', dried prawns, lemon grass, galangal and spices akin to curry. The garnishing comprises slices of onion, beansprouts (taugeh), mint leaves, Vietnamese coriander or 'daun kesum', cucumber and pickled white radish. Sambal belacan (a kind of chili paste) is placed on the side. Finally, just before eating, freshly squeezed lime juice is sprinkled on the dish. Unique to Johor laksa is its Italian connection - spaghetti is used instead of the normal rice noodles or vermicelli. Johor laksa is traditionally eaten using the hand and the noodles are usually knitted (cetak) into a disk for each serving.

Asam Pedas Ikan Kelah - now available at Cafe Lui

Ikan Kelah

As ornamental fish - kelah can be compared to the golden arowana or 'kelisa'. Kelah enthusiasts come from near and far to own kelah of various colours including red, blue, gold and silver.

As food - kelah tastes similar to the meat of the local ikan terubuk except it has less fine bones; and some even say it tastes as good as cod fish. The main value of this fish is derived from its taste which needs to be acquired as the texture of the meat is fine and almost "melts in the mouth".

The Cafe now serves gulai asam pedas ikan kelah, on request
